We are thrilled to welcome back Dr Stephen Mullen from the University of Glasgow this year, on the 3rd October.

He will deliver a talk on James Ewing of Strathleven who built Castle House. This will cover Ewing’s rise from University of Glasgow student to West India merchant, planter/enslaver, as well as landowner, politician, and pro-slavery propagandist.

Dr Mullen will also discuss Ewing’s landed purchases in Scotland: Glasgow House on Queen Street, Levenside (Strathleven) and of course, Castle House. He will place these purchases in Atlantic context, and underline how slavery-derived wealth affected the Scottish countryside.

We recommend arriving with plenty of time to ensure you get a seat.
