The Cowal Gathering, or Cowal Games as it is commonly known locally, has grown to become a major international event, attracting visitors and competitors from all over the world.

Celebrating its 130th Anniversary in 2024, Cowal Gathering hosts the World Highland Dancing Championships, Pipe Band competitions, including The Cowal Pipe Band Championship and international heavy athletics and backhold wrestling competitions.

On the Saturday we also offer a wide variety of family entertainment including traditional storytelling, live music featuring the best of Scotland’s traditional bands, arts and crafts, a mountain bike track, axe throwing, and a performance arena with family friendly acts. All of which is included in the cost of the admission ticket.


Thursday 29th August – Is the Scottish Open Highland Dancing Championships and the qualifiers for the World Highland Dancing Championships.

Friday 30th August – Is the Scottish National Highland Dancing Championships. There is also a juvenile solo piping competition.

Friday 30th August – Gig at the Gathering – 7pm to 11pm – This is a very popular stand alone music event held in the Music Tent on the Friday night. This year’s acts will be confirmed soon. (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)

Saturday 31st August – The Pre-Premier and Argyllshire (confined) highland dancing competitions take place in the morning followed by the finals of the World Highland Dancing Championships in the afternoon.

The Cowal Pipe Band Championship takes place all day and the heavy athletics and traditional wrestling competitions take place in the afternoon.

The afternoon is also when all the family entertainment takes place including the live music tent, performance area acts, Arties Singing Kettle and a host of other family entertainment that is all included in the cost of your ticket.
